By SweetMarie83

Novels that fall into the young adult genre aren't just for young adults these days. Many adults take great pleasure in reading books that are directed at teens - after all, look at the huge popularity and success of series like Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga, which are considered young adult novels, but which are just as popular with older generations as they are with teens.

If you're looking for some great summer reads in the young adult genre, check out my list of the top three.

Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7)
Amazon Price: $44.48
List Price: $86.93

The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling

The Harry Potter books - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - are popular worldwide for a reason. JK Rowling's writing style is easy to follow and engaging, and these stories are packed with adventure, danger, mystery, magic, and romance. With prevalent themes of friendship, love, loyalty, good versus evil, and finding inner strength, these books are a must-read whether you're reading them to a young child, or you're a teen looking for something new, or you're an adult who loves fantasy and still believes in magic. They're not necessarily your typical light summer read, but if you're the type of person who enjoys something a little meatier over the summer - something you can really sink your teeth into - this series will be perfect for you.

The Twilight Saga Complete Collection
Amazon Price: $42.44
List Price: $97.00

The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

Vampire novels, movies and TV shows have really come into their own over the last few years. It used to be that if you wanted a vampire book, your choices were pretty limited, and Anne Rice was the reigning queen of vampire fiction for a long time. Now, there are dozens of books and authors to choose from, but one of the most popular is The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer - Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. These books are packed with romance, action, sexy vampires and werewolves, all within a believable high school setting. Fantasy, legend, myth, and the real world all come together to create an excellent series of engrossing novels.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series - Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Second Summer of Sisterhood, Girls in Pants, and Forever in Blue - is like chick lit for teens. If you've ever had close girl friends, these books will really resonate. They're full of not only the bonds and trials of friendship, but love, heartache, self-discovery, the pain of loss and disappointment, and a myriad of valuable life lessons. Each girl gets to tell her own story, but at the heart of it is their story - the story of four best friends who love each other more than anything and would do anything for each other.

I've read both Harry Potter and Twilight. I enjoyed the Twilight books but cannot stand the movies. I saw the first one and refuse to watch any of the others as I think they are horribly done.

Have you read Host by Stephanie Myers? That was a good one (not a series). Another great young adult series is Hungers Games - I loved it and am now reading the trilogy with my reading class. They can't get enough!!

Hi Michelle! I feel the exact same way about the Twilight movies - loved the books, but they butchered the movies. It was really disappointing because I had such high hopes!

I have read the Host, and enjoyed it a lot. I've read the Hunger Games too, and love them, and was going to include them on my list until I decided to do a top 3!

Another good vampire series - one I think is even better than Twilight - is House of Night by P.C. & Kristen Cast. A co-worker got me hooked on them.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've already started Harry Potter, but I'll definitely consider The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants for my next series. I read the Twilight series once. Suffice it to say that for me, once was to much.

Nice hub. As a middle school English teacher I try to stay up on the latest YA stuff. But can you believe I've never hopped on the Potter bandwagon?!?? I just wrote a blog on my YA faves. One UP and useful.
